Benjamin Craig

My name is Benjamin Craig and my wife and I participated in the Berlin Internship. We are both students at Brigham Young University – Idaho. I am majoring in Economics and English in preparation for law school and my wife is studying nursing. We were thrilled to participate in this once in a lifetime journey to Europe and we were so grateful for the opportunity to live in Berlin.

During the initial interview process, I fully expected to be selected by some small law firm dealing with basic simple law as I had no prior legal internship experience. Instead, I was able to secure an internship with a company called Deutsche Bahn AG based in Berlin, Germany. Deutsche Bahn AG is the national rail company that controls nearly 100% of rail systems, passenger transportations, and cargo transports in Germany. Deutsche Bahn runs trains across all of Germany and they have subsidiaries in over 20 countries worldwide. I was assigned to work in their legal department with a team called HBM which was responsible for employment law, collective bargaining agreements, labor relations, and European labor representation laws.

Overall, the experience was once in a lifetime for me. It gave me a wonderful blessing of a new culture, a trip abroad with my wife, and perhaps most beneficial: a first start. Deutsche Bahn opened a myriad of doors for me. This internship with a Fortune 500 company and internationally recognized corporation opened doors I didn’t know possible. The legal component was a fantastic resume builder for law school applications. The internship boosted my resume and allowed me to immediately follow up an internship at Southwest Airlines in Dallas, Texas which is one of the most difficult internships to be accepted to in the United States.

The BYU Berlin Program was an investment in my future as it has given me my first internship, which has proved foundational in opening future doors. The Berlin internship program has been the highlight of my life so far with my wife by my side. I could not recommend it enough.
