Russian House
Come live in the Russian House and improve your Russian!
The BYU College of Humanities' Language Immersion Student Residence (LISR) is a BYU on-campus housing complex combined with a College of Humanities program where students pledge to speak only their house’s language while in their LISR apartments. This program "aims to develop confident and proficient world language speakers who are linguistically and spiritually prepared to make significant contributions in the world” (LISR Purpose Statement).
A native (or advanced) speaker of Russian serves as a Language Facilitator (LF) in each six-person apartment at the LISR and helps the other residents improve their language skills. The men’s and women’s apartments for each language gather for dinner four nights a week, Monday through Thursday, and share food preparation responsibilities. Residents also receive academic credit for participating in the program and living in the LISR through 1-credit RUSS 311R. Successful applicants have usually completed RUSS 101 & RUSS 102 or have significant in-country language experience before applying.
If you are a native or near-native speaker of Russian, you can apply to live in the Russian House/LISR and serve as a Language Facilitator (LF). This qualifies you to receive a scholarship equivalent to the cost of LISR housing and is a great way to help others improve their proficiency in your language.
