Russian Study Abroad Funding - Summer 2025

Receive full or partial funding for your study abroad in Latvia:

  • Fund for Education Abroad:

    Up to $10,000 to applicants from groups underrepresented in study abroad and those destined for nontraditional locations. Applications are due in September.
  • Gilman Scholarship:

    $5,000 to U.S. undergraduate students who receive a Pell Grant. Applications are due in October and March.
  • Global Opportunity Scholarship:

    Up to $5,000, a needs-based award for students to have their FIRST academic experience abroad. Applications are due in October, January, March or July.​
  • Humanities+ Study Abroad Funding:

    $500-$1750 for Humanities majors & minors. For summer programs, applications are due in early May.
  • Humanities Undergraduate Mentoring Grants:

    Up to $1,500 for student-initiated, faculty-mentored research projects outside the classroom. Applications are due in November and March.
  • ISP Discount:

    Up to $1,000, depending on FAFSA score. Applications for summer programs are due by May 2.

Scholarships for Russian Majors and Minors:

  • Gary L. Browning Scholarship:

    The scholarship is awarded to selected students in good standing and who are pursuing a degree in Russian. Gary L. Browning was a professor of Russian at BYU for many years, and also served as the first mission president in Moscow, Russia. Professor Browning passed away in 2024.

  • Gerald and Martha Browning Scholarship:

    The scholarship is intended for students pursuing a degree in Russian. Mr. and Mrs. Browning were long-time supporters of the Russian program at BYU and the parents of Professor Gary L. Browning.
  • Richard L. Chapple Scholarship:

    Intended for students studying the Russian language. Richard Chapple was a professor of Russian Language and Literature at Florida State University from 1971-1997. He served as president of the Russian Moscow Mission from 1993-1996. Dr. Chapple passed away in 1997.

    NOTE: Applications for the Chapple and Browning scholarships become available in January of each year. A link will be sent out in the Russian Program newsletter. For additional information about these scholarships, contact Russian@BYU.edu.

  • Advanced Russian Language and Area Studies Program (RLASP):

    For intensive immersion Russian language programs in Europe and Central Asia. Applications are accepted in February, March, and October.
  • Boren Awards:

    $25,000 to study a language overseas for 6 months or longer. Applications due in January of each year.
  • Critical Language Scholarship (CLS):

    Fully funded, group-based intensive Russian language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences for seven to ten weeks each summer for U.S. citizen undergraduate students. Applications are due in November of each year.
  • Fulbright U.S. Student Program:

    Granted upon completion of the first undergraduate degree. Applications are due in August.
  • Humanities+ Alternative Professional Experience Funding:

    For majors and minors in College of Humanities seeking unique opportunities of variable length with professionalizing value that are not a study abroad or an internships. Applications accepted all year.
  • Professional Internship Funding / Humanities+ Internship Funding:

    $1,000-3,000 for Humanities majors or minors participating in an unpaid, professionally supervised internship. Applications accepted all year.
  • Language Immersion Student Residence (LISR) Funding:

    For declared minors and majors in the College of Humanities. Applications are due by the add/drop deadline each semester.
  • Phi Sigma Iota Scholarships:

    For collegiate and alumni/professional members. Applications are due in March of each year.
